If you are a fish out of water or you know someone else who feels like their gills dry up if they are away from the water for too long, this blog tastes like that! For me, time on the water is time well spent and it gives me tremendous peace and energy. The mission of this Captain’s Blog is to share that energy with you and if it improves, your life on the water, then my mission is accomplished. It’s summertime in Florida and here are some great ways to keep cool and simultaneously capture some of those omega 3s with all that Vitamin D.

  1. Fish your nearest structure at night and use live bait. Consider either of these 2 spinning reels which are set up for live bait fishing. They have a live bait mode with a separate drag to allow your bait to move around more naturally but not completely leave you in free spool or a backlash type of scenario. When you see the strike or hear this drag and you start to reel, these reels automatically switch into a lower gear allowing you to crank that fish off the structure and put more fish in the cooler. I have moved from the Shimano bait runner to the Okuma bait feeder series simply because of the cost. That being said, I do have both brands and they both perform well with live bait fishing. Check these out or if you are looking for a gift for that angler / fisherman in your life, consider these reels with an Ugly stik rod to complete the outfit.

  2. Go scalloping or lobstering! This is a great way to beat the heat and you can reap some amazing rewards if you are seafoodies. If you want to purchase snorkeling gear that lasts and makes you feel like a fish, I recommend buying Mares Avanti Superchannel FF Fins. I've had these same fins for over 30 years and they are comfortable and help me spear fish, dive for scallops and lobster and just swim fast. If you want a low volume mask for free diving that you can clear quickly and easily without wasting a lot of air, cressi Italian masks are amazing. I've also had this Cressi Super Occhio mask for over 30 years and it has always helped me free dive in Florida and the Bahamas.

  3. Wear tormentor waterman 5 pocket board shorts I know what you are thinking. How are 5 pockets board shorts gonna keep me cool? Well, I've been wearing these shorts for the last 6 years and bought a second pair because they keep me wanting to hit the water. You may also be thinking won't 5 pockets get in the way of my fish like movement. This is not the case with these board shorts. These are surfer, fisherman and free diver approved. The pockets do not catch water and fill up to slow you down in the surf or while diving. The tough durable fishing plier sleeve pocket is the MVP for getting these shorts. You can use any set of fishing pliers with a lanyard to connect to your small loop on the waste line. Drop your pliers while handling a toothy fish, no problem. They are still attached to you. I also use this lanyard to connect my kill switch lanyard to myself while under way. Safety First mon!
